Photo of Clinton HarrisThunder Bay residents deserves to be happy and proud again to live in a city that has so much to offer. The city has seen many changes over the last years of increasing crime, outside gang activity, shortage of beds for those suffering mental health and addiction, increase in homelessness and human trafficking and so far the silence of our federal, provincial delegates and current and past councils that have done nothing to eradicate the seriousness and impact this has on our community. What business wants to come to a city where we are the murder capital of Canada never mind the challenges the city administration creates when trying to build with numerous obstacles creating frustration for those that wish to grow our city. I am a community builder and have had many successes over the years. The skills I have gained running large and small business along with helping those less fortunate leave me well armed to combat the effects of neglect of past administrations. I have no fear of making those accountable come to the table with resources and do what they should have been doing all along, making Thunder Bay prosper, safe and creating the pride we deserve. With the guidance of a Mayor that knows how to make best of our resources and creating efficiencies we can grow and we can make our streets safe and we can be proud again. This is a serious job I’m applying for and my resume speaks for itself. No more broken promises and failed plans. Hire me and change will happen.

Photo of Gary MackStrong neighbourhoods are the foundation of a great city. Your neighbourhood is where you live, meet your neighbours, where your kids play and where life happens. From Neebing to Current River, Westfort to McIntyre our neighbourhoods are suffering. We need new leadership with a powerful vision to rejuvenate our community and create strong neighbourhoods to live in.

Gary Mack has a plan. These 4 pillars will get us where we need to be without leaving anyone behind:

Create Safe Neighbourhoods
Support Local Business
End Homelessness
Make TBay Affordable and Deliver Value for your Tax Dollars

Gary is an award winning entrepreneur; awarded Entrepreneur of the Year for Innovation by the Chronicle Journal, Small Business Excellence from the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce and received the City’s Respect Award for community involvement and leadership.

Gary was Executive Director of Shelter House, turning it into one of the most innovative and recognized shelters in Canada. Gary was critical to the relaunch of the Street Outreach Services (SOS) program. He built relationships with local businesses, unions and Indigenous people, including Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Matawa First Nation. Local police/EMS acknowledged that the SOS program helps keep people off the streets and reduces the need for police and medical intervention.

Gary believes it’s paramount to be open about the issues plaguing our city and do the hard work to address them.

Photo of Robert SzczepanskiAt some point, politics became a wealthy person's game; I aim to change that. The government should strive to help the most people, not just those who have the most already and promise it will trickle down.

Our city keeps chasing expensive projects for the most well-off, hoping to encourage tourism and immigration. What pushes new residents away has been the city administration's apathy towards the addiction crisis, the homeless crisis, and scandal after scandal with our senior police administration.

We need to invest in our city's people if we want to thrive. We need to invest in our basic infrastructure: roads and public transit. We need to find new ways to make up for the shortfalls of the province and federal governments in our city's health.

I am not running for legacy projects and luxuries. I am running for compassion. I am running for the people.

Candidates for Councillor at Large

The following biography has been provided by the candidate and posted verbatim with no changes by the Office of the City Clerk. The views and opinions presented are of the candidate only and are not endorsed by the City of Thunder Bay or the Returning Officer for the 2022 Municipal Election.

Photo of Rajni AgarwalAs a local Thunder Bay Realtor for the past 31 years, I have heard owners concerns and challenges.    My professional experience has taught me a simple rule.     In order to have happy owners, great properties and returns on investment...the rules are:

1)  Do not go into debt more than you can afford.

2)  Maintain and repair property in a proactive manner

3)  Clean and declutter inside and out

4)  First Impressions create curb appeal

We need to work together for common goals.   Prosperity for Thunder Bay.     I have the experience and the knowledge to be a voice for our citizens.   I am from the North, born in Nipigon, raised in Thunder Bay.   Home is here.

My objectives are

✔ To lower tax burden on citizens by attracting more industry and business

✔ To clean our city.   Timely evaluation of our infrastructure and repair or replace in a proactive manner.

✔ Community Consultation, to plan, and action.   Let’s do rather than talk about doing.

✔ To make educated, business and accountable decisions..for Canada’s largest centrally located city.

✔ Thunder Bay still has affordable real estate….we need to develop ; Reduce the Red Tape

✔ To increase recreation, culture for all ages: youth, seniors and tourists alike.  For an inclusive and diverse community.

WE are the center of Canada.  WE have all forms of transportation,  WE link the east to the west and the north to the south.     Let's all work together to clean and shine as citizens.  I listen and I do care.

Photo of Rob BarrettThirty-six years ago, my wife and I chose Thunder Bay as the place we wanted to live and raise our four children. I’m running for Councillor at Large because I care very deeply for this incredible community, we all call home.

Having worked as an executive director for three social service organizations combined with running a consulting business focused on change management and better performance outcomes, I am experienced in working successfully and positively with all levels of government.

As a community, we need to openly and collaboratively develop a plan to meaningfully address our immediate needs and take the steps necessary to realize our longer-term goals progressively and productively.

A vision should be shared by our community members and regardless of who sits on City Council, that vision should be recognized, honoured and fulfilled beyond the four-year window most City Councillors have to work within.

Individuals have already identified that we need to invest more in our infrastructure and make our streets safer. Housing needs to be accessible for all, including those struggling with mental health and addictions. Living costs need to be held to an affordable level.

To afford these, we also need to grow our economy, especially our “green” initiatives to continue to protect and enjoy a community we can all prosper within.

My entire career has been based upon service to others. With your vote, I hope to serve you in an even greater capacity, with transparency, accountability, and vision.

Vote for me on October 24 to make your voice matter!

At Large - BentzHaving served the community in various capacities over the past 25 years, I would like to put my knowledge and experience to work for the people of Thunder Bay again. My experience includes leadership roles in economic development, social services, education and government having served as a director on numerous organizations as well as having been elected to City Council and the Board of Education.

My platform is a simple one: I will make policy decisions that are in the best long-term financial interests of the City with a focus on infrastructure upkeep and enhancing the quality of life in our community. Investments in our physical and social infrastructure are a must if we are to control costs and make Thunder Bay an attractive place to live and prosper.

My position on taxation is that we must keep any increases in line with inflation over the next term of Council.

My track record is one of getting results. I served as Chairman of the Waterfront Committee that oversaw the creation of Prince Arthur’s Landing, a project that attracted over $100 million in private, federal and provincial investment into the Thunder Bay economy. I believe that seeking out, and successfully attracting outside investment is a key feature of successful cities; we need to do more of that.

Above all, I am committed to being accessible to you. I will continue to host regularly scheduled town hall meetings to provide a forum for questions and community discussion for all citizens.

Photo of Shelby Ch'ngThunder Bay will need experience around the council table as we usher in a new crop of leaders who will need time to learn their new roles. I bring that experience.

Having served on council for two terms, actively chairing and participating in more than a dozen committees, my progressive approach to moving our city forward is what will be needed as we elect a new council in this post pandemic world. I’ve never shied away from taking on large, politically sensitive files. I’ve served Northwood for the last 8 years with my shoulder to the wheel of $16 million in infrastructure, crossovers, a youth centre, splash pad, Conservatory upgrades and active transportation upgrades that make our neighbourhood walkable and liveable.

I would be honoured to continue to serve the citizens of Thunder Bay with my sleeves rolled up and ready to take on the challenges before us.

Photo of Dan CourtneyFirst and foremost I am the proud father of 2 teenage boys who I would hope to see stay and thrive in our community.

I served as a police officer for 20 years where I worked in supervisory and training roles as well in forensics, school officer and community policing. I then went into a teaching role at Confederation College while at the same time beginning my journey into entrepreneurship which includes starting a business consulting junior mining and biotech companies and now am President and CEO of a company that provides diabetic skin care solutions for Podiatrists and Chiropodists.

I have volunteered as a former Chair of the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre and am presently Chair of the Police Foundations Community Membership Group at Confederation College. I have also been a member of the local arts community as lead singer of a local band.

I believe that Thunder Bay is experiencing immense change through a variety of factors including a diversified economy, infrastructure, demographics and a high violent crime rate. These issues are not one dimensional and each affects the other. We live in an area of unparalleled beauty, full of amazing, talented people yet need leadership that can face tough challenges and make logical decisions with such issues as crime reduction, road maintenance, infrastructure spending and build on the many positive changes that we have seen over the last few years.

I will work tirelessly for this community that I love dearly.

Photo of Kasey Taylor EtreniI lived in various areas of our community, settling in Neebing. I volunteered with professional and non-profit organizations at municipal, provincial and national levels and at different levels of governance. I thrive on process, policies and procedures development, and governance.

My career included research, speaking engagements, authoring a course, and serving on numerous hospital committees. I have strong decision making, problem-solving skills, detail oriented and seek out help and support when unsure. I ask questions for clarity and understanding. To be effective, council relies on an efficient team to drive success. I am one of those team players given my reputation as a committed, approachable, and flexible thinker. I respectfully consider the viewpoints and ideas of others, supporting an environment that encourages creative thinking. Lifelong learning is important to me. As a critical thinker, I research topics, being prepared when asked to analyze, debate and most importantly, vote. He is 52 years old, married to Chelsea and has two children - Travis, age 25 and Madison, age 23. Trevor is currently employed at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, as the Deputy Superintendent of Programs, and has previously owned small businesses in Thunder Bay. Trevor Giertuga has served sixth consecutive terms on City Council, having first been elected in 2000.
Giertuga firmly believes in being accessible and accountable to his constituents, and he accomplishes this through constituent site visits, town hall meetings, by promptly returning calls, by following through with issues raised, and by making wise thoughtful decisions on behalf of the taxpayers of Thunder Bay. He encourages citizens to contact him regarding any concerns they may have on all city matters. Giertuga has a deep love for Thunder Bay and is committed to making our city a more vibrant, inviting, inclusive and safe one. He continually fights to strike an appropriate balance between keeping taxes low and maintaining the level of city services constituents rightfully expect. Photo of Robert GirardinI want to help build a city where my children will have an opportunity to prosper and will be proud to call home. I don’t want them to feel that they need to leave town for work, like my wife and I did, because there are no opportunities here for them.

In broad strokes, I want to focus on:

- health and safety
- economic diversification
- alternative revenue streams to reduce tax increases
- increased quality control of infrastructure projects
- creating fun, safe spaces for residents (especially for children and youth) to spend their time
- becoming a city that innovates rather than one that plays catch-up
- building a culture of community and respect for all

I’m a recently separated father of two young girls ages 8 and 11 and I am the fourth generation of my family to live in the East End. I currently work as a substitute teacher with the Catholic school board, but my education and work experience have primarily been in science and software development, working in quality assurance at BioWare, a division of Electronic Arts, in Edmonton, online learning systems software at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and graduate research at Lakehead University in medical imaging of cancer and computer simulations related to Alzheimer’s disease.

If elected I will base my decisions on the best data available and work hard for long-term success instead of short-term gains.

Photo of Shane JudgeI am a retired Municipal Affairs reporter who covered Thunder Bay city hall for 30 years. I have undergraduate degrees in journalism and law.
I support the private sector proposal for an indoor turf facility at Fort William Stadium rather than a $48 million publicly-owned facility paid for with taxes.
I believe we can build a new police station for far less money than the current $60 million proposal. We would do this by sharing facilities with the OPP and Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service.
I will push for improved road maintenance and repair, especially along our main arteries. This could involve new repair equipment and extra road crews.
I will also move to quickly to improve the stop-light system to speed up the movement of traffic along our main arteries. The reduced idling times will make this the greenest initiative the city has ever undertaken.
Longer term, I believe we have to bring our operating costs under better control. The per capita cost of running Thunder Bay city hall is significantly higher than the average for municipalities across Ontario.
For example, I firmly believe we can save significant dollars by combining the back-office services of the city with those of TBaytel, Synergy North and the District Social Services Administration Board.
I also want to create a $500 million wealth fund using the TBaytel dividend to pay for major new facilities such as the replacement of the Fort William Gardens.

I also assist newcomers to our country to establish a home, employment, etc. I want to help advance our city to ensure we are growing and more prosperous for the future.

Safer, Stronger Community and New Jobs

Photo of Jim MauroThunder Bay offers a unique way of life, but we continue to have many obstacles that prevent us from fulfilling our potential. These challenges include a lack of population growth, distance from major markets for large investment opportunities, and a lack of government funding from senior levels of government. We need to strongly advocate for increased funding to meet the health challenges that exist in the areas of mental health and addictions. In addition, CRIME and the increase in GANG ACTIVITY is something that cannot be ignored by Council. It is my hope to use my experience to bring specific proposals to Council that will make this community safer.

We cannot achieve our full potential without hard work by your elected representatives and the commitment of various stakeholder groups. We are a caring compassionate city, and by working together we can achieve great results. If elected to council, it is my commitment to FIGHT FOR WHAT UNITES US and to FIGHT AGAINST WHAT DIVIDES US.

I have been a lifelong resident of Thunder Bay. My parents built a small business on Churchill Dr. Married for 37 years with two sons and a grandson. I started coaching sports when I was fourteen and have volunteered for many organizations helping raise millions of dollars for those in need. I was a member of the Race Relations Committee and started a breakfast program at a local primary School. I believe in the motto “when you can help, you do”. Jimmauro2022.com, Jimmauro2022@gmail.com

Photo of Dino MeneiI am a straight forward person that gets right to the point and am great at finding solutions to complex issues.
I am a quick learner and consider myself a hard working blue collar individual who is not scared to get my hands dirty helping others.
I have helped many different companies grow and helped local businesses save time and money on thousands of different projects.
I am a part time hobby farmer, and I own a company which specializes in recycling many products including aggregates, concrete, asphalt, metals and many others.
We do demolitions, road construction, heavy equipment contracting, landscaping and much much more. For over 40 years we have been recycling everything from pop cans to building products and finding ways to reuse whatever materials we can.
Being able to help people with good solutions is more important to me than making a dollar.
My goal while sitting on city council is to keep taxes down and promote infrastructure, job creation in the community and improve service and promote fair decisions in regards to snow management, road and infrastructure maintenance and cut red tape which I feel the taxpayers of Thunder Bay deserve.
Thunder Bay has a lot of departments within the city that need input from councillors with experience in related fields to make better choices for taxpayers and build a safer community. This will also help prevent frivolous lawsuits, claims and inconvenience which taxpayers in turn have to pay for.

He is an alumnus from Lakehead University, with a degree in History and a minor in Political Science. He enjoys his work for a wonderful family as a sandblaster/labourer at Lakehead Monument. As the son of a prominent Thunder Bay resident, Eiji Tsubouchi (George Jeffreys Children`s Treatment Centre), like his father Brian understands the importance of giving back to our community and supporting the goals of our Thunder Bay residents. Photo of Andrew FouldsLeadership, Experience and Unity

It has been a pleasure serving you as Councillor for Current River.

I am seeking re-election - I truly believe that Thunder Bay is on the verge of greatness. Now is the time for strong leadership, experience and unity.

I am proud to have delivered for the people of Current River and the citizens of Thunder Bay:
• A brand new, $10 million Boulevard Lake Dam;
• New accessible play structures at Boulevard Lake and Centennial Park;
• New tennis and pickle ball courts at Boulevard Lake;
• A revitalized Muskeg express, and
• Millions of dollars worth of investment to our roads.

As a husband and a father - Kristine Hilden and I together have three sons Alex, Luke and Matthew - I know first-hand how important such amenities are to our city, and the people and families who call it home.

I am proud that Thunder Bay has adopted a Net-zero strategy to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to Climate Change. I supported our new Official Plan that will grow this city sustainably and economically. I am particularly proud of initiating the new Lead Replacement Program that supports homeowners as they replace lead service pipes.

The work continues. We must continue to invest in the city that will promote economic opportunities. We must also recognize there are significant challenges such as poverty, mental health and addictions.

I would be honoured to serve you again and fight for you at City Hall.

Photo of Duff StewartI spent 31 years as a High School teacher and 13 as a city councillor in the City of Lloydminster AB/SK. My retirement in 2013 saw us return home to Thunder Bay. Shortly there after, I became a Shuniah councillor that lasted 6.5 years. The sale of our camp made it necessary to resign. We’ve resided in Current River for 10 years.
Current River Councillor is my route to become more involved with decisions made in the city. Over the decades the experiences have prepared me well for this role. My biggest strength is listening and getting resolutions to tough problems. Public input is necessary to keep the public aware of decisions made by council. One other method is by broadcasting council meetings on cable.
The subject of policing needs a focus on what model do we need. We could evolve into a community policing model a cheaper and better for community coverage.
Road maintenance and planning budgets need to be reviewed for best efficiencies.
Looking other cities and how they handle costs, can show successful plans for implementation here. A city out west city asked for ideas to reduce costs. It paid a 10% finders fee those who ideas fit. It saved millions in taxpayers money.
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities, has a Green Fund for grants given to plan green ideas, as a member we can apply. This investment in helps get ideas off the drawing board and into workable local projects.

Photo of Andy WolffI’ve decided once again to run for the position of Current River Ward Councillor.

I have been a life-long resident of Current River Ward. I’M EMPLOYED as a Dangerous Goods Coordinator at a major airline servicing Northern Ontario and Manitoba. I am also a CERTIFIED FIRST AID INSTRUCTOR. I have served on the Anti-racism Committee and was responsible for ensuring our meeting minutes were made public. I have done multiple presentations before City Council regarding our facilities, finances and institutions.

I will bring a NEW STYLE OF GOVERNANCE to city hall, by giving a STRONG VOICE TO THE CITIZENS OF OUR CITY. I place a higher value on TRUTH than TRUST. It is my expectation that working respectfully with City Administration, we will achieve that goal. MAINTAINING OUR PRESENT INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES will always take a higher priority than ANY new capital projects brought before council.
MY DECISION MAKING will be based on requiring ALL information be presented before council, resulting in a WIN-WIN situation. MY ACCESSIBILITY TO YOU will be to hold regular Ward meetings and be available by phone or email to address your concerns. MY ACCOUNTABILITY TO YOU will be to distribute regular quarterly reports through out Current Ward and publish how each member of City Council voted on major issues. MY OBLIGATION will be to represent the Electors of Current River Ward and give them a right to be heard.

Photo of Stephanie DanylkoWho am I?

Fairness, change, sustainability, togetherness/unity, honesty, integrity and transparency are very important to me and I abhor injustice - on any level. In the workplace, I took on such roles as Union Steward, Health and Safety Representative, Human Rights advocate, as well as president of various committees. Being in such roles, I experienced bullying and coercion tactics, though I stayed on my own course. I am uncensored in my honesty within integrity, despite how uncomfortable that could be.

I believe that each one of us IS the change we wish to see and that one voice can snowball into a force of many. We've been dreaming of change for a very long time, haven't we? Politicians in government are not the answer for a positive future - we are! We all have a say in what we choose to go along with and what we would like to see in our Communities. Be that voice!

I will not make empty promises.

I will represent the McKellar Ward to the best of my ability. I will advocate for the planting of indigenous trees to our area on our boulevards and parks. Plants such as raspberries, blueberries etc, to be in our parks and boulevards, as well as more Community gardens. I think it is important for our neighbourhood Communities to get back to actively knowing one another and having Community events - bringing people together.

Voting for me is also voting for yourself, as change happens from the grassroots up and WE are the change!

In Community,

Stephanie Danylko

Photo of Brian HamiltonThunder Bay is on the cusp of transformation. Growth in mining, tourism and shipping have positioned the city well as the economic engine of the north. That means jobs, expanding the tax base and strengthening our ability to address our unique social challenges.
As well as a focus on industrial growth to reduce the residential tax burden, I remain committed to the ongoing maintenance of our infrastructure assets. Further enhancement of our capital program will ensure that our roads, bridges and waterworks perform optimally.
As well as my duties at city hall I regularly volunteer at both Evergreen United and P.A.C.E., both organizations that serve our most vulnerable citizens.
I have operated businesses in the McKellar Ward for more than 20 years and created the Bay & Algoma Buskers Festival as a vehicle to support small business, arts and culture in the city.
Being present and accountable at the neighbourhood level has given me unique insights into the needs and desires of the community.
My style of leadership is collaborative and bold. I enjoy great working relationships with a variety of organizations as well as city staff.
Given another term at city hall I would continue the important work of rebuilding the downtowns, reforming the bylaw division, advancing housing opportunities and advocating for residents.
Building a sustainable community: one of fiscal responsibility, equity and hope is the cornerstone of my candidacy.

Photo of Lori ParasIn today's political climate, electing a candidate that is not the status quo is more important than ever. We need a candidate that stays true to their constituents and doesn't just talk the talk but gets things done. We need someone who will fight for what's right, not what's easy. We need someone who will stand up to special interests and put the people first. We need a fresh start, and I believe that I am that candidate. I'll be a voice for the people, not the powerful. I'll be a fighter for working families, not corporate interests. And I'll always put my constituents first. That's the kind of leader we need in today's political climate. So if you're tired of the status quo and ready for a change, I ask for your vote. Thank you.

Photo of Greg JohnsenHi, my name is Greg Johnsen and I am running for Neebing Ward Councillor.
I am 47 years old and a teacher with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board. I am also on the Board of Directors with the Thunder Bay Museum, a Committee Member with the North American Society for Sport History, a published author, and I live in the Neebing Ward.
I am running because I want to get the position of councillor back to its roots - to serve the residents of the Ward, not just the City, the Ward.
I am motivated to help push for positive change in our community and that is why I will work for the residents of the Neebing Ward. If you have snow removal concerns, culverts that need clearing, potholes that need fixing, or any other concerns, contact me because it will be my job to help you.
I believe in walking trails, playgrounds, access roads, and a turf facility. Our ward needs safer walking routes for families, animal lovers, and retirees and that is why we need better walking trails. We need better playgrounds with basketball and tennis courts and even a splash pad, like other Wards in the city. Parkdale needs a secondary access for its residents. This is a serious safety concern and it is time we get this done. I am also in favour of developing an indoor turf facility and I believe it should be built in our Ward.
For these reasons, this is why I am running for councillor of the Neebing Ward. I am asking for your vote! Please email me or call if you have any questions or ideas.

Photo of Shaun KennedyShaun Kennedy was born and raised in Neebing Ward, where his parents built their family home in 1986.
After graduating from Lakehead University, he joined the agricultural sector and worked his way up to a management position, leading capital projects that provide economic benefits for Thunder Bay.
Shaun comes from a long line of community builders; his father was a long-board trustee and his grandfather served on the Ontario Advisory Council of the Federal Business Development Bank and founding Board Member of the Northern Cancer Research Foundation. Shaun carries on this tradition with a dedication to our city and its residents. He is pursuing a city council seat to ensure that Neebing Ward remains a safe, family-friendly ward as it continues to expand and grow, and that it will continue to be the best place to grow and thrive for future generations.
As a councillor he would be committed to making smart and efficient use of city resources to maximize effectiveness of spending. As a lifelong resident, he is advocating for a more focused approach to addressing city infrastructure as a means of making Thunder Bay a more desirable place to live and visit, building a more welcoming environment to potential business, industry and private property development and taking care of our citizens through more robust addiction services and assistance for people experiencing homelessness. Together, we can inspire change to ensure Thunder Bay remains a beautiful place to live.

Photo of Basil LychowydHi I am Basil Lychowyd and I am running as your Neebing Ward Councillor in which I lived here for the past 15 years. I will bring to the table my strong voice, transparency and leadership skills for you. Presently I sit on the CLE board of directors as the Fair Chair, which we have successfully completed another safe and sound fair. I have served with the Canadian Forces, worked in management in the manufacturing sector, and in the family owned waste management business. I believe we need to look down the road and to the future. Today we need to separate the wants from the needs. Better roads, safer streets, crimes, jobs, and new businesses. We need to reach out and create an action centre to help the residents and seniors that need help with technology, computers and phones, just to do business with the city. Residents should have a say and some vote on major spending ticket items. Any large amounts of profits coming back to the city should have a percentage used to lower your taxes automatically. I look forward to hearing your ideas and thoughts. I am up to the challenge, I will roll up my sleeves and work for you.

Photo of Bill DellI think we all want the same things, good roads, safe city, accessible healthcare and programs for the less fortunate to live a quality life.
Management of the Valhalla, working on Construction of water and sewer in Tbay, to being a professional truck driver and a School bus driver. I have the experience necessary.
The city is in trouble. It seems every issue that the council focused on only had 1 outcome. Take trucks off of Dawson Rd, no other option. Build a soccer plex for $45 million dollars, no other option.
Yeah we have a new ambulance plan, 2 months later we have code black. Yes we sunk the James Whalen, and 4 months later we have a million dollar salvage bill and the cause is still under investigation. We have a new dam and all the water leaked out of Boulevard Lake. Yes I am frustrated, at the LACK of ACCOUNTABILITY.
Not one person who is running has told you TAXES are GOING UP! With 8% inflation and a raise coming up for the union, our taxes are going up 10%. I won’t vote for that. I will put it to the administration to cut operating costs by 10%. NO CONSULTANTS!
We need someone who has the knowledge to ask the tough questions. I will ask those questions. I would be honored to receive your trust, and I will not let you down. I am a reasonable man, a good listener and I want to hear from you.

Photo of Syed KabirBeing a responsible citizen, entrepreneur, parent and a homeowner, I understand the routine challenges many of us face in Thunder Bay. Additionally, the pandemic has made us more vulnerable than we have been in years. It’s time that we take our next step forward, focusing more on economic growth, infrastructure, and improving quality of life. We need to develop a comprehensive strategy with short and long-term goals that will lead us to a creative solution.

I have a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) Degree from Lakehead University. I was the Advertising Manager for the Chronicle Journal from 2017 to 2020. In 2021, I served as a President of SHIFT - Thunder Bay’s Young Professionals Network. I have a history of volunteering with EcoSuperior, United Way, Salvation Army, and more. I served as a judge for the Business Excellence Awards for the TBay Chamber of Commerce the past three years. I am the founder of CREON MEDIA, and also the current General Manager at the Italian Cultural Centre.

My priorities for Thunder Bay are working towards a stronger economy, improving infrastructure, promoting skilled trades, and a safe and inclusive neighbourhood. My education, career credentials and direct involvement with local businesses and non-profit organizations have given me the skills and mindset to serve as an effective member of Council. Your support during my election campaign is wholeheartedly appreciated, and I humbly ask you to consider voting for me on October 24.

Photo of Chris KrumpholzMy name is Chris Krumpholz and I am honoured to be running to represent fine people of Northwood. As I journey through its neighbourhoods I have listened and learned much. The citizens have many concerns including the condition of roads, general City maintenance, safety issues and the state of some Municipal parks. A frequent issue seems to be a lack of communication from council and administration to City residents. I believe that these are solvable problems. I have decided that it is time for me to step up and elevate the voice of Northwood residents.
My municipal experience involves sitting as a member of both the Sister Cities and Anti-Racism and Inclusion advisory committees. As well I am proud to chair both the Parking Authority Board and Victoriaville Board of Management.
If elected I will encourage council to conduct a needs and wants analysis of City spending to better understand how the City utilizes its resources (including reserves) to meet the needs of its residents. Afterall, as elected officials council and administration are stewards of YOUR money, accountability to the people should be top priority. Through this assessment we can adjust our thought process and look for both efficiencies and gaps in city services to find ways to keep taxes low.
I promise to always listen and engage on behalf of the people of Northwood. I am passionate about Thunder Bay and its people. Together we can make a difference. October 24th Vote Krumpholz, a fresh voice.

Photo of Mike MaherWhy Mike Maher for Northwood?

I’m a Lawyer.

I’ve enjoyed a successful law practice for seven years. I know my experience helping businesses, First Nations, police services, and area municipalities gives me unique perspectives. City By-laws need work. A lot of this work has been deferred over the years and it is time to do the hard work that doesn’t make for good headlines but has a real impact on people’s day-to-day lives as residents, homeowners, consumers, business owners, and taxpayers.

I’m a Teacher.

I teach students how to be lawyers in a clinical practice. I teach bright minds how to be ethical, sharp, and organized. I help vulnerable people with their legal problems. I teach the public about their legal rights.
I hope to have the privilege to empower the other 12 members of our City Council to think harder and get things done for you thoughtfully and efficiently.

I’m on your side.

I chose to return to Northwood after being away at UofT and Windsor Law because I couldn’t imagine a better place to live. Northwood has been hit hard by pinhole leaks and so many of my neighbours are suffering. Now, more than ever, I feel the need to give back.

I promise that if you trust me with your vote this October, you’ll get a City Councillor ready to hit the ground running and get things done for Northwood. I want to work with other Councillors to build a better Thunder Bay and a better Northwood for everyone.

Candidates for Red River Ward Councillor

The following biography has been provided by the candidate and posted verbatim with no changes by the Office of the City Clerk. The views and opinions presented are of the candidate only and are not endorsed by the City of Thunder Bay or the Returning Officer for the 2022 Municipal Election.

Photo of Brad FordThunder Bay has been my home for all 28 years of my life, 21 of them being in the Red River Ward. Something I can remember from my early years is the strong sense of community we had. Neighbours helping neighbours, Block Parents, being able to leave your doors open at night, and just a general sense of togetherness that I feel has escaped us as a community in recent history. It’s time to bring that back. We are an excellent city that deserves to be the Gem of The North, and we don’t need consultants to tell us that. Nor do we need any sort of legacy projects, as you, the citizens of Thunder Bay, deserve better.

I’ve been in the automotive sector for over 10 years and have forged excellent relationships with many small business owners along the way. My customers always come first, and you would be no exception. I work to serve you, not special interest groups that continue to hamper our economic growth and limit our full potential. I will ensure that your tax dollars go towards infrastructure, development, sustainability, and that you have as full transparency as allowable to know where that money is going. I will also investigate certain bylaws and decisions that have hampered our ability to attract business in any form to our city.

It's time for real change. Time to give a real legacy to future generations. Something that can’t
be bought, only given. Together we can be that change.

Photo of James Dean MarshI am a 59-year-old foster parent and retired Machinist/Electro-mechanic who has over 35 years of experience providing Predictive Maintenance Programs to Mills, Mines, and businesses across Northwestern Ontario ensuring cost-effective solutions to prolong longevity of infrastructures. Being retired allows me to address your needs full-time which every constituent, and the position, deserve.
For decades our cities infrastructures have been neglected and have now got to the point where expensive remediation of infrastructure failure is commonplace. Looking after those infrastructures is my expertise and I can concentrate my efforts full-time to pinpoint corrective action to save tax dollars and avoid costly increases. This will free up funds that can be relocated into projects that make our city better.
Concentrating on the cities needs, instead of legacy projects is more important than ever. With increased labor costs due to a smaller available workforce, increased material costs, and a high rate of inflation, this and next year, any huge legacy builds should be put off until these conditions level off.
With the growing infrastructure gap, we need to concentrate and put our resources toward lessening that gap to make it more sustainable. Council should have to prove they could budget to look after the infrastructures we already have, before adding to that infrastructure.

Photo of Martin RukavinaPriorities:
- Focusing on the basics
- Forging better relationships
- Framing a future path together

I believe that government is there for people. What matters to people is how well government shows up for them. Whether through roads, snow removal, mental health and addictions or other essential services, we as a city need to deliver and communicate better. We need to be focused on explaining rather than telling.

My career has focused on building Northwestern Ontario up. Whether through implementing socio-economic projects on the Ring of Fire, working collaboratively with Indigenous partners to transform health and human services or establishing private-public partnerships that achieved positive outcomes in the face of constrained budgets, I’m proud of my experiences. They taught me humility, respect and how to bring together different voices to get the very best ideas. They also taught me how to advocate for change, build coalitions and seize opportunities.

Admittedly, it’s a bit intimidating going door-to-door but I’ve been impressed by the thoughtful and constructive ideas that people have. I want to create more opportunities for community empowerment and make the role of councillor less about one person being the decision-maker and more about how we, together, can act. I’m not sure that I’ll always succeed and expect to be held accountable when I fail but I’m hoping that you’ll support me in helping the Red River Ward thrive.

Photo of Katherine SuutariI am proud to be running for the Red River Ward Councillor and will do my best to bring forward any issues my constituents raise.

Over the past 10 years I have seen Thunder Bay go from being a good city to live in and now not so much. There are so many issues that come to mind and have been raised by my constituents where the current city council has failed to hear or action including:

1) Soaring Crime – lack of punishment and police protection
2) Affordable and Livable Housing – people sleeping in the hallways, needles, and drugs
3) Consultants – many consultants for one project to get the result they want
4) Overspending and wanting to leave a legacy rather than doing what is good for the people of Thunder Bay
5) Road Conditions – instead of the soccer complex or the excessive amount that is spent on consultants we could use the money for road repairs.
6) Unelected officials closing our small businesses during the pandemic while the box stores remained open and thrived. The prediction from an article in the newspaper is that more businesses will likely file for bankruptcy.

The biggest concern my constituents have is city council does not include the people of Thunder Bay on any proposals or decisions that are made.

My platform is simple, my constituents will decide on what I do as a city council official. I will not be influenced by lobbyists or special interest groups or other council members.

Photo of Jason VeltriFor as long as I remember, politics and helping people have been apart of my life in some way, shape or form. I sought out at a very early age to always ensure people were seen and heard. I was 17 years old when I worked on my first political campaign, knocking doors, or delivering lawn signs. Now, 21 years later I stand for elected office because I truly believe I can make a difference in the lives of those around me.

I am a dedicated, hardworking community organizer and passionate activist for Human Rights. Over the past many years, I have been focused on making life better and more inclusive for Equity Seeking, Indigenous and Racialized communities. My true passion is working to build a community that provides a fair chance for everyone, no matter who you are, no matter what your race, creed, how you choose to pray or who you choose to love.

I, along with my family have lived in Red River for the better part of 25 years. I know this ward, its people and what makes us great. We are a diverse ward full of new families to seniors who built Thunder Bay over the past 50 years. On October 24th, let's elect a new generation of leadership to City Hall, to fight for what’s fair and ensure voices of those who haven’t been around the table before are heard.

Let’s Build Community, Together.

Photo of Michael ZussinoMy name is Michael Zussino and I am running for Red River Ward Counselor. I am 49 years old and a lifelong resident of Thunder Bay and Red River Ward. I have been an educator with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board for the past 25 years. I have been married for 23 years to my wife Tina and have 3 teenaged children.
My community involvement includes being on the board of Inter Lucania Soccer League, facilitating marriage preparation at St. Anthony’s Church, regularly volunteering at the Dew Drop Inn and hosting fundraising quiz nights for various local organizations.
I am interested in helping better our community by joining the council and having an impact in the direction of our city. I try to stay physically active by participating in many activities our municipality has to offer. We need an indoor sport facility for our city due to the long inclement winters that limit some people’s ability to stay active. Infrastructure deficiencies need to be addressed before roads, buildings and sidewalks fall into an irreparable state. Underutilized buildings need to be repurposed to help address homelessness in our city as well as investment in social services needed to aid with mental health and drug addiction.
I have worked with the young and old of our community in various capacities and would love to help provide a place that people are proud to call home. We need to pull in the same direction for the betterment of our municipality.

Photo of Alan D. CorbettI’m a local business owner, parent, and entertainer with a passion for the arts and compassion for people. I want your voice heard and I’m ready to work for you so that it is.
Growing up in Westfort, I took an interest in music and spent 20 years analyzing trends and predicting industry shifts while co-developing various aspects of local music scenes as an entertainer, events organizer and promoter. My experience in the entertainment industry has taught me to evolve with demanding and complex situations, to constantly seek constructive solutions, and to understand and grow from my mistakes.
I eventually shifted to the hospitality industry, working in management in restaurants for the past decade. I enjoy working in a mentoring role and have proven myself an effective leader who faces challenges with patience and perseverance.
Currently, I am co-owner of a start-up multi-media company, Kontrol Media Studios. I have experienced first-hand some of the hardships faced by business as a result of COVID-19 and am here to discuss those challenges and work together towards solutions that build a stronger future.
With me comes a strong work ethic, dedicated leadership and a passion for Westfort and Thunder Bay as a whole. I believe our neighborhood needs a new voice at the table who is committed to listen, advocate, and work tirelessly to make this a stronger community and a better place for everyone.
A vote for me on October 24th is a vote for a stronger future, together!

Photo of Kristen OliverI’m Kristen Oliver and I’m seeking your support for re-election. Serving as your Westfort City Councillor for the past four years has been such a privilege. By working together, we have accomplished so much. We can now enjoy Vicker’s Park through the winter months with a skating loop. There is a plan in place to enhance the Mountdale Boat Launch ensuring that the area is accessible while caring for the ecosystem around it. With the expanded tree planting throughout the ward, we will have luscious green coverage for generations to come. A Community Safety Zone on Mary Street West will help protect the children in the area walking to school on a busy street. These ideas and suggestions came from you, the constituents who call Westfort home. I have been your voice in the Council Chambers and believe that we still have work to do.

Thunder Bay has significant challenges to address, but we cannot do it alone. I take pride in building relationships and bringing the right people to the table. Like most communities, addictions and mental health issues are applying pressure on emergency resources. My experience advocating to the provincial and federal government is needed as we work collectively to improve the quality of life for all citizens.

As a lifelong resident of Westfort, I am proud that my husband Rick and I are raising our two sons in the ward we love. I’m invested in this community and want to build a city for the future.

Photo of David TommasiniI'm David Tommasini. I'm running for counselor in Westfort. A great city is measured by the quality of the lives of the people who live in it.

Now is the time for leadership grown out of taking on the city's toughest challenges and winning. That's what I've done. That's what I'll do as counselor.

I grew up right in this neighborhood. I went to school right here at St Anne's Elementary School. Westfort runs through my veins. I've grown hoarse more than once cheering on our Westfort village. I'm a Westfort kid who wants to continue to serve his city.

My brother's and I learned our values from two loving parents. This is where I learned that what matters, is not your name, but what you get done. It's where I learned that you usually get more done when you work with people than when you fight with them.

But, it's where I also learned that you have to be prepared to take on tough fights and that making a real difference in people's lives is what matters most.

Photo of Ellen ChambersI have many loves – family, friends, nature, Thunder Bay, social justice, and public education. I am seeking re-election because being involved in public education excites me. I love seeing children achieve. I was part of and instrumental in ensuring that we gained our first Indigenous Student Trustee and Indigenous Trustee. Our Strategic Plan and Indigenous Education Framework (of which I was one of the driving forces) lead our schools, the province, and the country. These Board of Trustee accomplishments were also my personal goals. I am personally committed to Reconciliation - to educating myself on the true history of Canada I believe in our youth and the vitality and hope that they have. I’m honoured to sit with two magnificent student trustees. Their voices are essential to listen to, understand and act upon.
I’m committed to the vision of LPS and values – inclusion being a touchstone for me. Education has been my career– as a teacher, union leader locally and provincially and trustee. I know that every child must have access to the best education we can offer and know that LPS is the best! My involvement in social justice grounds me. I fought for and achieved 2SLGBTQIA children’s rights and making schools safe places for all. I have been part of the Aboriginal Education and Equity and Inclusive Education Committees for 15 years. I am co-chair of Diversity Thunder Bay. Integrity is my guide. It is an honour to represent the needs of children!

I was educated through Lakehead District School Board and hold a Master's Degree in Business Administration, Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science-Pre-Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Lakehead University. I served with the Royal Canadian Navy for over 17 years in Thunder Bay, Toronto, Halifax and Victoria. I am a recipient of the City of Thunder Bay Citizens of Exceptional Achievement Award for volunteering to support the Dew Drop Inn and the Canadian Armed Forces medal of service.

We all want our children to receive the best education possible to achieve their personal and career goals. Board Trustees must implement the policies needed to support the success of all students. I am proposing that a "Center of Excellence for the Trades" be established for the students who will not attend a college or university. I'm also proposing the establishment of a parent/guardian committee that will directly influence how the board will use learning methods to support a student with different learning needs.

Photo of Pat JohansenI believe in publicly-funded education ensuring all students are safe, happy, and healthy and are in an equitable, caring environment that is accepting and is best for all students; a place where physical, emotional and mental health needs are met. We need to ensure the funding is there to support all school staff.

I have been involved with the education system as a parent volunteer and advocate for parents/guardians and students. I’ve been a member and later President of the Ontario Federation of Home and School Association. I was a member of Claude E. Garton School council and chair of Hammarskjold’s Council. I served as a Trustee with the Lakehead District School Board, sitting on most of the board committees (Parent Involvement, Aboriginal Educational Advisory, Special Educational Advisory, Audit, to name a few).

I am a board member for EcoSuperior and the Thunder Bay Public Library Board. I am a volunteer and Council member with the Military Family Resource Centre.

I would bring my years of active involvement in the Education Community to a Trustee position. I listen to all information before I make any decisions. I am a team player. I want to help the Lakehead District School Board ensure the Ontario Government hears our concerns and acts on them.

Photo of Donica LeBlancI had a fulfilling career as an educator and had various leadership roles with Lakehead District School Board for numerous years, many of which had a Special Education focus. In earlier years, I also worked in outlying Indigenous communities as an educator. I am now retired and ready to contribute to education in an alternative way by representing the voice of the public. I believe we need to work together as a community, to support children in achieving success and by maintaining a safe learning environment. This means providing various opportunities so that all students are able to access their career/life choices. It also means providing staff with the necessary tools and training with which to work. With this diverse background in education, along with my time on a board focused on early childhood, working at the university level and as a parent of Lakehead DSB graduates, I feel I can provide a meaningful voice to influence the necessary supports for students from preschool to graduation so that they can achieve success. I value this opportunity and I wish all candidates the best of luck!

Photo of Paul David SequeiraOur children are the future and we have to put them first.

My name is Paul D. Sequeira and I am pleased to introduce myself as a candidate for Lakehead Public School Board Trustee.

As a parent of 4 kids, 3 of which attend public elementary school in Thunder Bay, and the youngest joining them in a couple years, I have a vested interest in the future of my kids as well as yours.

Currently, I work full-time in Thunder Bay, and will concurrently complete a Masters of Economics degree at Lakehead University this year. Being a parent, student, and employed adult gives me a relevant and broad perspective of the future our children will be experiencing; the world has changed dramatically in the past 10 years and I am prepared to advocate for the real challenges facing our kids and to provide a fresh and relevant perspective on the Board of Trustees.

I am actively involved in the community, have served on a number of boards, and currently sit on three. This involvement allows me to work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals of varying perspectives all trying to better serve diverse groups of people; I strive to achieve fair and equitable outcomes in all parts of my life.

It is important for me to advocate for what parents want and what children need. I believe in putting our childrens’ interests first because supporting them IS supporting our collective future.

Photo of Ryan SitchI believe that public education is the cornerstone of society. For society to thrive everyone must be provided the opportunity to pursue education at all levels, and that chance begins in JK and is cultivated through to Grade 12. I believe that everyone should be able to see themselves represented in our school systems. Our schools should be an equalizer that allows every student to grow to their fullest potential.
As a Trustee seeking re-election, I have the experience of working in our system to make change for the better. Over the last 4 years I have supported and helped push Reconciliation in our board with the creation of an Indigenous Trustee position, as well as a brand new Strategic Plan with a supporting Indigenous Framework. I want education to be inclusive for all and focused on the future. That means supporting education in trades, technology, science, and the arts. Students learn in different ways and that matters, we must account for all methods of learning in a public system that leaves no one behind.
As a father with two children in our school board, you can be assured I strive to ensure our board meets the needs of mine and everyone's children.
I have spent the last 4 years fighting relentlessly against curriculum changes, reductions in funding, changes in funding models, and racism in our schools.
I am an honest, inclusive, progressive and dedicated individual who will continue to work tirelessly to serve the children of Lakehead Public Schools.

Photo of Trudy TuchenhagenI feel honoured to have been a trustee for the past several years and am rerunning for this position because teaching children and helping them learn is my passion. I have been the vice-chair of the board for the past three years and a teacher with the board for thirty. I have obtained my teaching certificate along with my distinction in special education. During my teaching career I taught in the elementary school system but, most of my career was spent working with students in the field of special education. As a trustee, I have seen how the pandemic has affected many of our students, academically, socially and emotionally. I feel that those students who have fallen behind should receive extra support to help them maintain a sufficient grade level. Futhermore, mental health has become a crucial issue with many of our students, and they require support to help them function within their day to day lives. We live in a diverse society and it is crucial to ensure that there is equity for all students. Our students are the future in which we need to provide them with a place of learning that is a safe, healthy and nurturing. This environment is where they learn best, and that is what they deserve. As a trustee, I will continue to work to ensure that our children's needs are being met, and that they will receive the best education possible.

Photo of Leah VanderweyBorn and raised in Thunder Bay. I am a proud supporter of Lakehead Public Schools. I have been a student, teacher, principal, and a parent of this board and as of September 2023, a grandparent as my first grandchild attends J.K. at Lakehead Public Schools.
I worked for Lakehead Public Schools and three regional school boards as well as the Ministry of Education in a variety of roles including teacher, principal, Superintendent, Student Achievement Officer, and Thunder Bay regional manager for Field Services. Those opportunities have provided me with a local, regional, and provincial perspective. As a Trustee, I can bring that breadth of knowledge as we, the elected board of trustees, participate in making decisions that would benefit all students, schools and their communities.
Indigenous Education, Special Education, Mental Health supports, and Academic Achievement for all should continue to be our focus from J.K. to graduation.
As a board of trustees, our decisions must be centered around student achievement, well being, and equity. We must ensure that all students who attend our schools, no matter where they are or their circumstances, are given what they need to succeed and our staff are fully supported to make that happen. This focus will support the parents/guardians of our students and the community at large.

As an elected official, I look forward to advocating for Lakehead Public Schools so that all students have equitable opportunities for success in life.

Photo of Eleanor AsheAssociating with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, has been a priority with my professional and personal involvement for many years. As a former student, teacher, principal, administrator,  parent of five, grandparent of ten and great-grandparent of eight children, being with, for and in this system remains a valuable asset in my present capacity.  As a trustee for the past fourteen years, interest and commitment to Catholic education remains a foremost life goal.

As a member of five liturgical and pastoral ministries, ties with the triad of church, home and school are clearly defined.   Volunteer service with all of the above, in addition to community and municipal agencies, have helped to focus and assist others in personal assistance as required.

My tenure as trustee creates a positive balance in my life-learning goals.  The privilege of being a member on all the Board committees, has helped to develop a positive partnership between TBC and stakeholders. Our strategic plan and governance model strives to promote our philosophy-Educating for Christian Values and Academic Excellence, with the leadership and action plan of a professionally dedicated administrative, educational and support staff.  The impact of the effects of the pandemic have weighed heavily on everyone. Our Board as a system has met the  challenges with integrity, care, compassion and concern fostering safety, inclusion and diversity for all people.

With continued commitment,  another term as trustee would provide the opportunity to continue this  rewarding Catholic Christian ministry of service which places all students first.

Photo of Gloria GabrijelcicMy name is Gloria Gabrijelcic, and I’m a retired Operations Manager. Currently, I am married with two children that were educated in the separate school system. Having been an employee of Sears for several years, I developed a skill set that will be transferable to the role of Trustee. The role of manager had afforded me the opportunity to interact with a variety of people in our community, while working as a team leader to problem solve, manage and inspire change.

Education is instrumental in developing the future of our children, and therefore we must have an education system in place that is inclusive, inspiring and promotes learning for all. Most recently Covid has impacted our lives and within that, the education of our students. I would like to have the opportunity to be part of future decisions that ensure our children continue to get the education they deserve within an environment that promotes learning and well-being.

In this ever changing and challenging world, the stability and continuance of a good education is crucial for all students. A good education supports the needs of the individual and provides the foundation for future success. I am ready to take on the current and future challenges in education and therefore, I am eager to be part of the process! On October 24, 2022, please consider me, Gloria Gabrijelcic, as your separate school board representative. Vote me in as your trustee!

Photo of Dina McFarlaneEducation has always been a source of purpose and fulfillment in my life. I was a teacher for 33 years, fostering many wonderful connections with others; colleagues, parents and students. My late husband, Tim, was also a teacher, as are all three of our children. Since retiring in 2011, I have been volunteering to read in classes on a weekly basis. I understand and appreciate what makes Catholic education a unique and life-changing experience. It has allowed me to create lasting bonds with students and families.

At the core of every issue surrounding education is the well-being of each child. It is of vital importance to me that students are well-prepared for the future, academically and emotionally. I have always maintained this ideology, as a teacher and, most recently, as a trustee.

In the past four years, as a member of the Board of Trustees, I have served on various committees and participated in making decisions that benefit our students. Most recently, I have served as Board Vice Chair for the past 18 months. I understand the importance of being an active listener, open-minded, and working as part of a team.

I treat every decision - whether policy formation, budget, or parental concerns - seriously, with respect and integrity, always maintaining focus on students’ needs, achievements, well-being and equity.

It would be an honour to continue to serve as a trustee for the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board.
